Schools Development Programme
The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company (JYOC) began the Schools Development Programme in 2005 at Roseneath School in Hillbrow. Children are taught the recorder in groups with the focus being to develop the children's interest in music and to give experience with instruments and group performance. Currently, group recorder classes are held in no fewer than fifteen schools.
The programme also functions as a platform to identify promising young musicians. These students are then offered individual tuition on orchestral instruments. It is hoped that these children will join on of the ensembles within the JYOC. The success of this programme can be measured in the numerous requests received on an ongoing basis by the JYOC for more classes to be established.
In an exciting new development, group recorder lessons are now being given at the Abraham Kriel Childcare Centre in Emdeni, Soweto. Children up to the age of 18 years will now have the opportunity of discovering and nurturing their musical talent.
