Partnerships ...
The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company (JYOC) has established strong relationships with a number of schools, churches, foundations etc where we can offer support and, in turn, can benefit from the association.
Khulanathi Music Project in Daveyton: This is a projuect that was established in 1998 and is run by Bennett Mamabolo. Young people from this project have been involved in the Teacher Training Programme at JYOC.
Faith Brethren Apostolic Church Thokoza: The JYOC has helped raise funds for this organisation. Children come to the JYOC for lessons and to play in ensembles. Senzi Morajane and Thembisile Buthelezi are two young people currently having lessons at the JYOC. Senzi plays the cello in the Foundation Orchestra, and works as receptionist in the JYOC office. Thembisile plays the double bass in the Foundation Orchestra and is involved in the Instrument Repair Programme. Once a year, the JYOC joins with the Faith Brethren Apostolic Church to present a concer.
St James Brass Band: Three members of this band, Floyd Machate, Joseph Hlatshwayo and Brian More came to the JYOC for formal instrument tuition. Brian is now a full time teacher at Roseneath Primary in Parktown, Floyd Machate is a member of the JPO Academy Orchestra. Both Floyd and Brian work on a part time basis for the JYOC.
Field Band Foundation: Some of our student teachers have been invited to attend the Field Band Foundation Training School in 2011 which is an accredited programme. Two Field Band Foundation students have enrolled on our Teacher Training Programme
South African National Youth Orchestra Foundation: Students from the JYOC are sent to audition to play in the National Youth Orchestra.
The JYOC works closely with a number of schools:
- Both private and public school music programmes.
- We partner with Soweto schools for our development projects, receiving full support from principals, teachers, parents and governing bodies
- The projects benefit the schools’ arts and culture learning area, sharing expertise and skills with teachers.
- Several schools support the JYOC as “A Friend of the Orchestra”.
