About Us ...
The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company (JYOC) was established in Johannesburg in 1998 as an NGO (Section 21 Company: 1998/22112/08; Non Profit Organisation: 008-867; Public Benefit Organisation: 18/11/13/2321).
Operating in Soweto, Johannesburg, Thokoza, Alexandra, Evaton and Sebokeng, the JYOC responds to the needs of the youth in all communities by providing a centre of musical excellence in orchestral training and a meeting place for over 1000 young people with musical aspirations. Music training programmes for young adults is a particular need as well as career orientation and skills development towards employment. Teacher training and training in instrument repair are just two areas where young adults can be equipped to find work in the music industry.
The value of music training is undeniable: children who learn music have an advantage over their peers in terms of emotional, intellectual, cognitive skills and abilities.
Vision
The vision of the JYOC is to contribute to human and social development, through the medium of music. By exploring the potential of young South Africans to learn, create, participate and be trained in music-making, the JYOC builds the capacity of youth, unlocking and nurturing their innate talent. In a development context, arts and culture participation is recognised as a key factor in human and social development.
